About

Maaike van Westen studied languages at Harvard and the University of Utrecht Language Department, where she obtained her Master's degree. Maaike started her career by working on a bilingual dictionary for a Dutch publishing house and writing for a Reed Elsevier company. After coming to the US, she became a translator and was certified by the American Translators Association as an English-into-Dutch translator. Aside from being a voting ATA-member, she is a member of the New England Translators Association, a vibrant community of translation professionals in and around Boston.

Carefully crafted

For each translation project, I research the end client and their corporate culture. I want to know who they are and what their objectives are. In my translations, every sentence has to be part of a cultural bridge that brings a client's message across. And that's simply what I enjoy: carefully crafting sentences.

Maaike van Westen has worked as a corporate journalist for a Reed Elsevier company and as a lexicographer for a prestigious Dutch publishing house. During her 20+ years as a translator, she's worked on a wide range of projects for various multinationals, including many Fortune 500 companies.
